Many metropolitan cities are affected by the urban heat island effect and are actively responding to reduce its impact. Dallas' response has been to require all new buildings to use roofing materials that reflect solar heat on at least 75% of the roof's surface; have a vegetated roof that covers at least 50% of the area; or use a combination of the two. The Perot Museum of Nature & Science is an exceptional example of Dallas' efforts.
